- Make sure you have a dedicated workspace, somewhere with as few distractions as possible.
- Make sure you have all the equipment you need. Technology & a good broadband connection are essential, but so is a good chair.
- Develop a routine. Plan your schedule with daily & weekly to-do lists. Set your priorities & stick to them as much as possible. Blocking time in your diary is a great way to visualise your workload & keep on track.
- Try not to fill your day with video calls and synchronous collaboration. If you are not careful, they will take over your whole day leaving no time left to carry out actual work. Ask yourself “what can I contribute to the meeting?” If the answer is not a lot, respectfully decline the meeting invite. Asynchronous communication like messaging can often work better & alleviate Zoom fatigue.
- Keep in touch with colleagues & ask for support when you need it. Good clear communication is much more important when working remotely.
- Keep in touch, socially as well as on a business level.
- Know when to take a break. Carrying out more than 90 minutes of focused work without a break drains your energy levels & reduces your productivity.
- Get away from your workspace & exercise. Go outside & get some fresh air. Going for a walk is one of the best ways to take a break & unwind. It is important to take care of yourself.
- Work on your self-discipline. Knowing when to stop working is as important as getting started. Don’t overfill your daily to-do list & make sure you have adequate time to complete all your tasks. Experiment with how much is too much. A good place to start is to schedule 1 big task, 4 medium tasks & 5 small tasks a day. Try it for a few days & then adjust the numbers to fit.
- Develop an end of day routine so that you shut off from work. Physically switch off to mentally switch off.
